Simply Jesse...

Remembering Sec Jesse Robredo

Today, we remember the day that the whole country stood still waiting for any hope that both the pilot and the passenger survived the plane crash near Cebu.  Three days later, tears flooded as both bodies were found deep under the sea.

I remember coming out from my introduction to political science class and heard everyone talking about the crash. At first I did not mind it but when I was already inside the taxi, I heard on the radio the name of the people in the plane that crashed. I was so shocked that I had to ask the kuya driver to increase the volume of his radio.

I was privileged to have an up-close personal experience with Sec. Jesse when he was still the mayor of Naga City.  I was then with a funding agency and we would meet with him for their project proposal.  He was not a typical local chief executive. He knows what is good for his people, knows what his people wants, and more importantly knows that he doesn't have to impress funding agencies because his outputs would speak for themselves.

I remember that he was the only local chief executive that welcomed us without an appointment in his crowded room. No red carpet treatment and no pretentions. We even took a tricycle to his office!

I remember the worldbank report on M&E tools for public service delivery that I co-wrote and was launched by our office three days before the plane crash.  He was our guest of honor and I remember his saying "hindi sapat na matalino ka, dapat may puso ka din".

Sec Jesse was different. People are now saying that he "could have been the president" that can truly give us the 'matuwid na daan" with his tsinelas governance but...

In my own little way, I want to spread how good this man was; how he initiated reforms in the government and how he continuously gives me hope for a better Philippines.  That is why, I volunteered to do a storytelling of the book, Simply Jesse by Yvette Fernandes and illustrated by Nicole Lim.

Simply Jesse is narrated by Jillian, Sec Jesse's youngest daughter.  She spoke of how great her father was and how much he was loved by people because of his humility, sincere heart and capacity to deliver results.  She also talked about how Sec Jesse was, simply her Papa; the things that they love to do together and how they coped up being distanced from each other.

This is not the first time that I told this story in my daughter's class.  The first time was last year during the "bring me your Mama" class activity in the Kinder 1 class at Kidslab Playlab Pre-school.  That experience was fun and cute.  The kids only remembered the "tsinelas" that Sec Jesse would wear everytime he was out cleaning his city.

This year, with support from our Parents-Teachers Association and my co-supermoms CJ and April, I did it in two sessions. First was with the Kinder 2 and followed by Grades 3-4 classes.
The Kinder 2 kids were energetic! Maybe they got too excited to have 3 moms in their room! They also got concerned about the bird in every page of the book.  They asked me why the bird is there... Which I myself don't know why! Hahaha Questions only kids can think of!

I am not sure if it is because it was too early but the illustrations in the book seem to have made them into one big cookie monster! because they kept on telling me "Tita Ella, we will just eat that bird! umm ummm (pretending to eat!) HAHAHAHA! Despite the physical and mental challenges of doing storytelling with this bunch, I really enjoyed it!
The grade 3-4 class was a different story.  Maybe because the kids are familiar with me, they decided to surprise me when I went inside their room! They automatically called me Tita Ella which is very sweet I think.

This bunch on the other hand was too keen with the illustration of Jill. First, she looks like the cousin of Mark; second, she was wearing a uniform and they cannot imagine wearing one and third, she is small for a 13 year old! Hahaha what an analysis!

It also helped that one of the kids in the class' father is a mayor. He was gracious enough to share what his father has been doing as a mayor and how it is to be a son of a mayor.

Of course, the kids were surprised that Sec Jesse would wear slippers because their idea of a mayor is rich, with bodyguards, with nice car and shoes, and with personal assistant... Well, I emphasized that.. that is the Jesse M. Robredo way.
As an activity, I asked the graders to draw their fathers and write "why their father is the best" on the hello kitty stationary that I gave them.  After that, I asked them to seal it inside an envelop and give it to their fathers when they get home.

I also asked them to share with the group why their father is the best. My daughter said that "my mom doesn't like my pets because their furs could kill me. My father is the best because he takes care of them". Another kid shared that her father lives away from them for work but he is the best because he would talk to her on the phone.

I also noticed that this bunch is gender conscious already.  The boys didn't like receiving "hello kitties" but I was able to convince them that they could give it to their younger sister or mom or classmate instead.  Hahaha! My stories can go on and on but I have to stop here or else I might reveal too much and risk bridging my secrecy contract with the kids.

I think that the value added of this activity is introducing the concept of "tsinelas" governance to the kids.  The concept of being humble and compassionate to others' needs. The kids asked why I requested them to be on their slippers when they have lovely shoes! I told them that... that is humility. You can afford to wear nice things but you choose to wear slippers because you want to be one with the people who cannot afford to buy good things. You can afford not to worry about other people and just serve yourself but you choose to serve other people.

Thank you Talent School of Academics and Arts for this opportunity to share Sec Jesse's life with our kids! Thank you to our Parents-Teachers Association for the full support! Thank you to my K2 co-parents CJ and April for the photos and support!

Thank you Sec Jesse for the tsinelas governance!

Gorgeous gowns, Gagandang bata and Grateful Mama Ella, Titas and Lola Music!

My sisters and I grew up enduring the long parade on a broad daylight wearing elaborated and heavy gowns, mud pie thick make-ups and stiff "spray-netted" hair!  We did this almost twice a year: holy week and La Paz fiesta.  We had to fake our smiles despite the swollen feet and bucketful persperation just because... we want to see our lola Edith and Mama look at us with great pride!

I remember that it was time for me to be the most coveted role, the "Reyna Elena" and maybe because it was a nightmare coming through, I got really sick with chickenpox. My sister was supposed to replace me but she also got sick.  Taking the hint my lola and mother gave up the idea of us joining the LaPaz sagala again! Hahaha

This year, it was my daughters' turn to (at least) experience what we went through. Haha! It was actually my eldest, Elle's second and my second, Bien's first experience.

Elle Marie did it in 2014. Unfortunately, it was the first week of classes in DLSU and we had no choice but to let her do it with her father.  It was not a "fireworks" experience for Elle because it was too early, I was not there to personally attend to her "kakikayan" requirements, and she was just not in the mood for long walks.  I have to confess that although it was an experience worth blogging and bragging about, I didn't because it was reflected on the photos that my husband took.  I also don't want my daughter to be reminded of her first experience because she might share it with her sister and discourage Bien.

This year's La Paz sagala was different.  We came in prepared. Since Lolo Leo paid for our airfare going to Iloilo just to join the sagala, I got extra cash to buy Elle a new gown. Although I have been scouting for a gown as early as February, I only got to buy her the morning of our flight to Iloilo (which is a day before the Sagala!!!) Hahaha bad mom! But, I compensated by buying Elle a baby blue, Frozen-inspired gown with sequence in front.  I bought blue because I was thinking that I am tired of all the pinks in our lives and it's time for a cool change! The gown was perfect for Elle.  Perfect for her complexion, the sabrina cut for her long hair and the lower part of the gown was perfectly flowing while she was walking.

Since I am an experienced sagala, I saved my daughter from my mother's make-up artist and hair designer. I painted my daughters' face with simple, "almost not there" make-up.  I also arranged her hair in a one-sided pony tail and pinned a nice hair piece that matches the color of her gown.  Most importantly, I made her wear rubber shoes underneath her gown.
Bien on the other hand wore her Ate Elle's old pink gown that perfectly fits her already. Ate Elle wore it the first time for her 5th year birthday party in school; in class programs and the 2014 La Paz Sagala.  It may be old but it still looks as enchanting as the first time I brought it.  I don't think anyone noticed that it was a recycled gown from the precious year! Bien's hair was simply brushed and clipped on one side using a nice pink rose hair piece that matches the color of her gown.  Like Ate Elle, she also wore her most comfortable walking shoes underneath her gown.
I am so proud of my girls! Although, as first it was very confusing for me who to be with because they were grouped according to age, I took turn with Ate Buladay in watching and taking my girls' photos. Yes, it was 5:00a.m., extremely hot summer morning, their gowns were heavy but both maintained their smile and poise.  Since they are my daughters, I believe that they actually stood out among the sagalas! I saw a couple of sagala observers and tourists taking pictures with them.  I also heard people commenting that they look very lovely and cute, some said that they must be new in La Paz because they don't know them but some recognized them as the apos of Mr and Mrs Calaor.

I know that Lola Moyette and Tita Bebe, who took turns with me taking their photos are so proud of my girls. My Nanay Edith would have been...

That might be my daughers' last time to join the sagala.  I just want them to experience it for themselves because they might see my photos and ask why me and my sisters were wearing gowns and walking.  Haha! I hope in time they will understand... and appreciate the experience.

I am so proud of you Ate Elle and Bien!!! Mama and Papa love you VERY much!!!

2015 TSAA Moving Up Day

Our girls are moving up to Grade 4 and Kinder 2 (Prep) next school year. Thank you Talent School of Academics and Arts (TSAA)! Thank you Teacher Cherry! Thank you Teachers LJ and Teacher Fran (Elle's teachers)! Teacher Aika (Bien's teacher)! Elle's extra-curricular teachers, the ates and the kuyas in TSAA, maraming salamat! Thank you for serving as second parents to our girls for almost a year. Thank you for making sure that my girls get the wholistic education that brought out their inner gifts.

I can still remember my struggle while looking for a new school for Elle after our traumatic experience with her former school. I remember crying in front of Teacher Cherry while retelling the experience. I was torn between quitting my job and go fulltime with my girls but of course that is insane! I was so concern that it will scar Elle for life and will never ever recover. But, TSAA was there since the ocular visit, the heart to heart talk with the directress, the trial class, day one... until the moving up day.

Parenting 101: When daughter wants to have kids less the husband!

Repost from Facebook February 25, 2015 entry

Sabi nya "Its just that I dont want a guy to kiss me on the lips. It looks yucky. Is it?" Sagot ko sa kanya, "Anak, when you are older you try it and see for yourself if it is yucky. For now, do not let any boy kiss you yet. Ok?!!!"

And then there were three...

And then there were three...

I grew up believing that I am one of the blessed individuals with really, really good eyesight. I would boast that I can read the smallest font without difficulty. I would not account that strength to my genes because my father has been wearing thick eye glasses as early as he can remember rather to the million of squash that I ate since I was small.  That is also the reason why I make it a point to feed my girls with squash as often as possible.

Until my Directed Research 1 came... I started with one pair from Ideal Vision at .75 grade, the mildest as the Opta described it. It was followed by another pair just because I kept on forgetting the first one.

First term hasn't ended yet but I am already oj my third pair! It started with a migraine that lasted for days.  I was scared that it was due to my worsened hypertension but no. It was my aggravated eyesight...

Blame it on the journals and reflection papers I required my five citigov classes; blame it my really small SAMSUNG Young; blame it my shortlived chatmate; and blame it on the rain... I dont think there is nothing nor no one in particular to blame. I am aging. Its bound to happen... ang importante, I can still see, read and I look great on my reading glasses!! Hahaha

Dani Girl... with my girl!

Last week, I got an invitation from my TSAA co-parent to watch "Danni Girl". I had no idea what this play was all about and I was too busy to do my usual background check. But, I thought that it could be a really good opportunity for Elle to bond with her classmates outside school.

Initially, Elle was supposed to just go on her own with her classmates and I will just wait outside and do my readings. But, I learned that most of my co-parents were going so I also went. Elle was of course ecstatic to learn that I had a change of heart.

The play was about a young girl named Danni who had leukemia.  She was battling the big "C" with her mom and her "guardian angel".  She later met another boy with cancer and together they tried to look for the answer to the question, "Why Cancer".

The play brought back mixed memories of my Ninang Telly while she was battling the big "C" years back.  Then, both of us knew it was coming but did not anticipate that it was that soon.

Why Cancer? I always thought that everything happens for a reason. That even bad things can happen to good people just because... it has a reason. But, why cancer? Nobody knows... its just part of the grand design of life...

I cannot remember watching a movie nor a play that I cried that much. Thank God it was dark inside RCBC auditorium!

But, Elle noticed me and asked "Mama are you crying because you think I will get sick and die like Danni?" Surprised, I was not able to reply immediately. So, Elle continued, "You know, Mama I will always drink my vitamins, drink milk and eat healthy food so that I will not get sick. So, don't cry na..."

Couldn't stop crying again after hearing that from Elle. She is such an angel! I love her and Bien soo much! Yes, everything that is happening around us doesn't need to have a reason. But, I know that I have my girls because God loves me very much.

Teaching LOVE

Teaching is really a labor of love. That is why a few years back when my hubby advised me to go back to teaching I hesitated. Deep inside I know that I have a calling for the academe but I thought I was not ready for it... Just imagine all the hard work I had to put to it. Preparing the modules, powerpoint presentations, talking points, examples and even reading the reflection papers and checking exams one by one. To add to that the requirements of PhD, publication, research and community engagements. And, the emotional preparations you have to put up to keep the discussion flowing, not bore your students, disappointments, "favorites", impatience... etc.

Maybe it is really the "mom" in me why I am now in the academe and surviving it one day at a time. Every time I seem at a lost, I always look at my students and think that soon my girls will be like them and they need someone to guide them not just in terms of their academics but how to approach life.

I really don't ask much. Yesterday, I got a note from our brother president that I got a salary increase. That's great. But at the end of the day, its really the love and respect that my students are giving me that keeps me going. Its the thought that when it is my girls' turn to be students (hopefully in DLSU:-)) they will also encounter someone who will really care for them.

Maybe, I am in the academe caring because I had teachers who really cared for me back then... To my School of Economics and Development Studies program professors, maraming salamat! Special mention na lang kay Ninang Cristela Goce Dakila. Yes, I will survive my PhD:-)

Ang Usapang Borrowed Wife...

(Reposted from Facebook)

Buhay nga naman...

While doing my readings, I overheard my girls discussing GMA 7's afternoon telenovena, "The Borrowed Wife". Bien asked Elle what a "borrowed wife" is and Elle explained that it's like Papa borrowing Tita **** to be his wife... Total silence, then... came Bien's cry!!!

"But, I don't want Papa to borrow a wife!!! What will happen to Mama?!! I don't want borrowed! I want Mama! Diba they are married?!! They love each other?!

Speechless, all Elle could say was "Mama, can we watch Frozen now?!" Hahahaha

Basically, the reason why I don't want my girls to watch telenovelas. Minsan mas complicated pa siyang i explain sa mga readings ko! Tara at mag Frozen for the nth time na lang tayo mga anak!

Lesson # 2 from being Elle Marie and Bien's Mama

An excerpt from February 10, 2013 Facebook entry...

Found the key to getting what I want for valentines day! Thank you mga anak for always being there for Mama!

Mama: Elle, I want flowers from Papa:-)
Elle to Papa: Papa, buy Mama flowers! (and he did)

Mama: Elle, Papa forgot to kiss me... I'm sad...
Elle to Papa: Papa, you kiss mama! (and he did)

Mama: Elle, I want some time alone with Papa please...
Elle covered her double deck with blanket (looks like curtain) and transferred beside Bien. Bien who is normally clingy to Papa was silent. Elle to Papa: Papa, I will take good care of Bien tonight. You sleep with Mama. You hide in the blanket so we will not see you ok?!!!

Ooooops! Too much information but bottomline is... Know who is the greatest boss of all:-) That's lesson number 2!

Lesson # 1 from being Elle Marie and Bien's Mama

An excerpt from February 5, 2013 Facebook entry.

Almost done with all my written deliverables when Bien Mary noticed that I'm not playing with her... She approached me and smiled. I smiled back and went back to typing...

Bien standing beside me said "Hello Mama! Say cheese" and pretended to take my picture. I said, "cheese!", gave her my super model fierce look and went back to typing...

Bien still standing beside me said "Mama, I want to help you. Can I? and pretended to type. I said "not now anak. Mama is rushing something" and went back to typing...

Bien lied down beside me and murmured "I want to help! I want to help!... " and pretended that I cannot hear her. I looked at her and gave up typing on her nth "I want to help!"

Lesson # 1 from working at home: Know who is the boss! No trespassing for DLSU and other deliverables until the bosses are wide asleep!

Online Purchase from hell!

Last year I was invited to be one of the resource speakers to the forum on Cyber Crime Prevention Act.  There, I mentioned the urgent need for such law and stressed that the current law needs to be revisited. Buyers and sellers who are the primary movers of our economy needs protection from cyber crime.  I still go with this position. Especially, after my most recent online purchase experience...

It took me a long time before I decided to write something about it. I went back to the details of the transaction and asked myself for the nth time where I went wrong... Now, I am coming out for my fellow moms who wish nothing for their kids to look and feel good especially on Christmas day.

A friend of mine once shared a site to me in Facebook saying that she thinks the tutu being sold in that site would be perfect for my daughter knowing that she is into ballet.  I agreed with my friend  and thought the tutu would look great on Elle for her birthday party.   Initially, I sent a pm to the online seller asking about it but the seller said it will be available end of October because it will still come from Korea. So, I decided not to get one.

Then came the entry above in December at P720 but offers 10% discount.  Even without the discount I don't think I will be able to resist not buying this lilac dress for Bien knowing that she will look good on it.  Since I am into pairs lately, I decided to order the same dress but in pink for Elle. I paid Thursday hoping they could wear it in time for a party but it did not arrive until Tuesday afternoon.

I was quite happy with the lilac colored dress. (Although I thought I could buy the actual dress for P300-500 in Divisoria. But, what the heck). I almost fainted when I saw the "supposed to be pink colored dress!!!" It was not pink but rainbow colored! To think that it should have been purchased from Korea. It was half sewn (sides unfinished or not sewn, legs will come out! Looks like two slits on the sides of a tutu). It looks REALLY cheap!!!

I immediately texted Jenny and told her about my disappointments! It turned out that although I specifically ordered for a pink size 6 "Madeline", she sent me "Madeline Pink" which was also part of her collection (but I did not see). I told her that I will definitely not buy anything like that dress because Elle is very particular with what she wears. In fact, our helper that she did not even tried the dress when it arrived!

To meet half way, we agreed that I order another dress from her collection and I have to get it from Juan Luna, Binondo instead of paying another P50 courier fee  (that turned out to be the main street in Divisoria).  This time, I ordered for a pricey dress because I liked the design and I thought siguro this time, maayos na...

This is what I got for my P1,300... Took this photo morning of Christmas day.  Elle wore it for one hour only. I will try to secure a photo of this dress that she sent me but I should have known it will not look that close in person...

Another lesson learned.... I should have known better. I doubt it if I will do online purchase again after this...

Hong Kong Adventures 2012

As I bid 2012 goodbye, I can't help but reminisce the blessings that God has blessed me with... It is really true that God is good and that when He allows it to rain, it will definitely pour.

Talking about blessings, I could not imagine how it was possible for us to visit Hong Kong twice in one year!!! But, it is not just about visiting HongKong because Elle Marie and I have been there before.  It is the thought of spending time with my dearest Bien Mary, sister Bebe and father on their first international trip!

First visit was in May, in time for my 36th birthday celebration. I wanted something different to spend time with my two girls.  Since, Bien and Tita Bebe haven't been to Disneyland before... we decided to go to HongKong!

Five is Hi! With Sleeping Beauty and Prince Philip
At the entrance of Disneyland

I I

I was overwhelmed by my girls reaction when they saw their favorite Disney pricesses! Sleeping Beauty is Elle's favorite so it was a priced possession that finally, we were able to have a photo with her!!! Bonus si Prince Philip and Rapunzel (who soon became Elle's favorite).

Just like our 2008 visit, it rained.  I should have learned my lesson but the show must go on and we watched the Disney parade while singing in the rain! Bien and Elle were soaking wet but I could not stop Bien from screaming "Mickey Mouse" as he passed by the area where we were standing! She even tried to follow him! The magic of Mickey!

The 3 days/ 2 nights stay was really designed to visit Disneyland and nothing else. It just so happened that we were blessed with a hotel, Royal Grand Hotel, that has an excellent sauna and swimming pool perfect for us girls! Hence, after visiting Disney we just stayed in the hotel doing nothing but eat and swim!

The second HongKong was in October in time for my girls and Noy's triple birthday celebration.  This time, we had my father with us. This trip was very overwhelming to me because I have dreamed of bringing both my parents abroad and spending time with my father in HongKong was definitely a realization of that dream (half-next year kasama na si Mama!!!)

My father is not the "showy and expressive" type. When asked if he wanted to go with us to Hong Kong, he just replied "Ok".  When asked if he is having a great time, he just responded "This trip must be very costly". When asked if he wants to do it again but this time in Singapore, he was quick to reply "Let's check my schedule (to think that he is retiring next year and will have a relatively freer schedule!".

Last minute, my father almost backed out of the trip because the national branch of his office was not able to release his "approval to travel abroad". (Something that I find weird because the trip was not even official and no cent was spent by the government for the trip! In fact, we even paid travel tax which goes to the government... but, I guess that is how it is to be a civil servant specifically, a civil defense servant) But, of course I protested and told him that if he backs-out, "Magtatampo ako!" and I will forever remind him of how he crushed not only my heart but my daughters' hearts because we have been preparing for the trip with him! Of course, he conceded.

Despite my father's reactions, I know deep inside that my father had a great time with me and my kids and that he knows how much I love him.  At the end of the day, those are the things that are important to me.

We love you Lolo Leo!!!

From one student to another... A special note to my students.

This was republished from a Facebook note dated December 25, 2012 with slight modifications.

This year's Christmas is very different to me. It was the first time that my Facebook account was flooded by greetings not just from friends and families but well wishes and kind words from my students...

Yes, almost two years of part-time and now, full-time teaching but this is the only time that I received personal messages as well as posts in my Facebook timeline from my students! Maybe because it is the first time for me to open up (yes!) my Facebook account to my students. Or maybe the courses that I have been teaching provided me an avenue to open up more to my students, engage them more to discussion where at times I cannot help but share my personal experiences...Or maybe it is the "mother" in me that makes me connect well with my students... Or maybe, for  the past two terms I was blessed with very good, cool, noisy at times but performing students. Whatever reason it may be, my heart is still overwhelmed up to now... Makes me remember my dear teacher, mentor, thesis adviser, boss, godmother, "almost" mom, colleague and close friend Ninang Telly.

If Mitch Albom would ask me, who are the five persons you will meet in heaven... I will respond without a blink of an eye that one would be my Ninang Telly. My Ninang Telly because she is one of the few persons that has really made an impact in my life. In my almost twenty two years (I first had her as my undergrad professor in 1994) of knowing her, she has touched me in ways that has made me a better person.

I am just glad that even before Ninang Telly left, I was able to tell her how much I loved her. I remember one text message I sent to her while she was in the ICU and I was home because my BP shoot up after learning what was happening to her. I told her that I love her like my own mother.  She may not be blessed with a daughter or a son but I know based on how she loved me that she was a good mother. I miss Ninang Telly. My daughter Elle Marie would always ask me to visit her Lola Telly. That's how much she is loved by my family...

It is ironic that just when Ninang Telly is no longer in DLSU that I went full-time with teaching. Now that I am with the Political Science Department, I was given an excuse not to frequently visit the mezzanine of the Economics Department (except of course to visit Marvin and Leslie. But, I want to clear that I love Eco Dept). But, I have no excuse to further my studies. I never thought I am an academician but I know that just as her father inspired her, Ninang Telly will not only inspire me but help me from heaven.

Being a teacher is a blessing from God. I get to meet students to love and who appreciates your efforts in changing their lives for the better... To my well wishers, thank you for touching my life... I hope that I have contributed something positive in your lives just like how my Ninang Telly touched my life.

To my Ninang Telly, you are still remembered...

The morning after... better luck next time Santa!

This is a follow up of my entry dated November 23, 2012 entitled "Elle Marie meets Santa" where Elle Marie told Santa her christmas wish... This was also republished from my Facebook entry dated December 25, 2012

This photo was taken the morning after while watching Barbie Princess Pop Star. Both girls are holding their respective Princess Tory and Kerra Barbies from Santa Claus! Heard from Elle when Mama called her to go down on Xmas eve...

Mama: Elle! Elle! Santa passed by! Look at what he gave you!!!
Elle: Mama, where is Santa? How come he left early? I want to say thank you!
Mama: Anak, Santa has to visit Sean because he is also going to give him a gift. He's also a good boy like you... and then he's going to visit other good kids! You don't want him to be late right?

Hugging and opening her gift...
Elle: Wow! Princess Tory!!! Can I open Bien's
Mama: No, let her open it tom!
Elle: BUT, I want to borrow the pink guitar of her Kerra!

Oooopppps!!! Santa! Next time be discrete naman when buying my girls their xmas gifts!!!

PROJECT RUNWAY: Christmas Alphabet Presentation

I am a self-confessed frustrated fashion designer.  If I am certain that I have the artist in me, I would have exchanged my academe and development work just to be a kiddie fashion designer. I have dreamed of having my own "Rajito" line and have my daughters do the cat walk with them.

That is why every opportunity to design or make a dress for my daughters, I really grab it. When I got a note from Elle's school that she will play as one of the Christmas Alphabets dancers and they are to wear something red the first thing that came into my mind is to recycle Elle's old costumes.

I first thought of her "spaghetti" costume but it was too small for her already! Until, I saw her "The Nutcracker" costume and thought of making it red by attaching red laces. Whoala! This is what I got from a P100 worth red lace from Divisoria!

I am one proud Mom when I saw Elle on the stage because she really stood out from the crowd on her red tutu (sad to say, there are Moms who are either too busy to read the note and follow it or they just don't care how their daughters would look like on stage) since the instruction was dress as a dancer (and the only dancer I could think of for christmas are ballerinas!) I overheard a couple of parents commenting that she looked very beautiful (they didn't know she's my daughter).

At the end of the day, it is not really about the savings but the amount of time, effort and love that I putted on making my daughter feel good in everything that she does. I love you Elle!!!

Elle Marie Ballerina: The Nutcracker

This year, Elle played the role of one of the columbines in Ballet Philippines and CCP Dance School's "The Nutcracker". Unlike last year, this year was a 2-day presentation from December 8 to 9 in Tanghalan Nicanor Abelardo, Cultural Center of the Philippines.

Initially, Teacher Gabbie said "columbines" and they will be wearing white and pink. So, I researched and discovered that columbines are small purple flowers... But when I finally saw her costume and her dance moves, she seems like a "Columbian" rather than a flower! hahahahaha! It really doesn't matter to me that she be a "Columbian" or "Columbine". What is important is that my daughter looked elegant and beautiful on her costume! Baby Ballet A sported a white tutu with red bows and laces. On their hairs, they were wearing red bow with crystals. Looks like her pink "cat" costume in "Sleeping Beauty" but again, who cares...

We would like to thank Lola Marlyn, Tita Nene, Tita Leonor, Tita Janee, Ninong Lingling and Wyona (not in the photos) for making Elle Marie's performance extra special!

We are sooo proud of you anak! We love you our very own Ballerina!

Elle Marie meets Santa!!!

My eldest daughter, Elle Marie has been praying to God for days to make Santa alive so that she can see him in person and tell him what she wants for christmas...

When God finally granted her wish, all she could tell Santa when asked what she wants for christmas was "Santa, can I borrow one of your reindeers? Just one? I want to fly in the sky like you". Santa was surprised and asked again if there's anything else she wants, she replied with a smile "My mama gave me my super pink bike already and I just saw her pay for the two barbies while I was looking for dress. The ate hid it but I know its for me and bien... so, no more na"

Huli si Mama!!! Dapat gift ni santa un e!!! Now, where can I get that flying reindeer?!!!!

False Alarm in HongKong!

It is the second to the last day of our stay here in HongKong. Second day in Crowne Plaza Hong Kong Kowloon East.  Arrived around 7;00p.m. after a half-day shopping and sightseeing in Stanley Market when I read this message from Michelle Wieland, Guest Services Agent in Crowne Plaza saying:

Good Afternoon Mr. Nonoy Oplas,

Kindly contact our Guest Services Reception at Ext 10343 regarding your incidental charges.

Thank you very much.

Got REALLY paranoid because yesterday, Bien Mary had this vision that she is a great painter and painted on the wall of room 3803 with her white board marker!!! This hotel is barely a month-old!!!

Bien Mary's art masterpiece in Room 3803 of Crowne Plaza HongKong Kowloon East
It was originally in blue but my father thought that it will look better in white.  So he used his white ink over the blue markings and whoala!!! that's what you get... I don't know which is better.  I was too sleepy and tired to look.

Yesterday, before we left for Tsim Sha Tsui, I called the housekeeping to ask them what they can do about it.  The housekeeping lady told me not to worry and they will take care of it!!! But, when we came back it was still there... I thought, maybe they will work on it when we check out...

AND now... I am getting this message from Michelle Weiland?!!!

Noy will be coming back from his dinner around 10:00p.m. I am getting more every minute knowing that we don't have any incidentals except for the extra bed for my father which I paid already when we checked in!!! I just can't take it anymore... so I called Michelle Weiland!!!

Me: Hi Michelle! This is Mrs Oplas. I am calling for Mr. Oplas re the message that you left us. What incidental are you referring to?

Michelle: Good evening Mr. Oplas (Grrr I have bad voice because of the coughing!) The incidental was the internet use and we were wondering if you can settle it before you check out tomorrow"

Me: This is not Mr. Oplas.  This is Mrs. Oplas.  Is that all?

Michelle: Sorry Ma'am. Yes, because... (trying to explain but nothing is getting through my head...)

Me: Michelle, thanks.  I will just ask Mr. Oplas to settle that as soon as he comes in.

God, I would like to faint now!!! If not for my two daughters who might get traumatized:-) I am overwhelmed with gratefulness that it was not about the painting!!! I was counting how much the wall paper, labor, opportunity cost would cost us!!! God!!! thank you!!!

For you Bien, I hope you read this few years from now... go back to Crowne Plaza and check if your painting is still there!!!
